Pre-Diabetic

Category: Diabetes Prevention

This case study examines a 59-year-old pre-diabetic woman as she seeks dietetic services.

The client presented with a starting weight of 370lbs and an A1c of 6.2% that put her into the pre-diabetic category. Based on the Framingham Risk Assessment her risk of cardiovascular disease was elevated 10%, and she presented with a heart age of 73, with her starting total cholesterol at 5.2 mmol/L, LDL at 3.5 mmol/L and HDL at 1.2 mmol/L. Her starting blood pressure was at 120/82 mm HG. She initially was taking the following medications Perindopril 4 mg 1 tab daily, APO-Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg 1 tab daily, Rosuvastatin Calcium 10 mg 1 tab daily, and Metformin FC 500 MG half tab twice daily. The client started using My Viva Plan® and had regular check-ins with a registered dietitian. After a year of commitment, the client’s laboratory measurements had improved and her hemoglobin A1c was no longer in the pre-diabetic classification as it had normalized to 5.8%, a decrease of 0.4%. She had lost 14% of her body weight and her heart age decreased to that of a 45-year-old. Her risk of developing a cardiovascular disease dropped by 7%. Her total cholesterol had decreased to 3.7 mmol/L, LDL to 2.0 mmol/L and HDL had increased to 1.3 mmol/L.  Her blood pressure had decreased to 106/74 mm HG. The client was able to stop taking her diabetes medication (Metformin- 500 mg daily) due to these positive changes. There is a great likelihood that her blood pressure and cholesterol medication will be decreased or stopped in the near future as well due to the positive changes in her blood work.

The client had great success using My Viva Plan as a tool to aide in lifestyle change and management, and improvement in overall health and chronic disease risk.
